Slovenia truly is a wonderland of adventure and entertainment and yet it maintains a charm and grace that sets it well apart from the cliche. To understand how it all works and to find what suits you, your family or friends it is useful to cast a quick eye over the country. We hope this guide will help you in your search.
THE JULIAN ALPS
Yes, we have mountains and big ones at that. Triglav is our highest peak at 2864 meters and is located in the north west of the country in what we term our Alpine region. Naturally skiing is the big winter event and it is here that Slovenia's largest skiing resort can be found at Kranjska Gora. Kranjska Gora summer. The region is also famed for its fly fishing and 2 years ago hosted the European championships. Other must see places include the fabulous Soca valley, the impossibly scenic Lake Bled, the heart stopping lake of Bohinj and a little further south the extraordinary caves of Postojna, home to the legendary human fish. It is here also, in the southerly region of the alps, that some of Slovenia's finest wines are to be found. Property prices, particularly around the lakes, are among the highest in the
country.
THE COAST
Approximately 2 hours drive south is Slovenia's tiny and picturesque coastline. Winter months are quiet but the summer sees a population explosion from neighbouring countries. Property prices, as you would expect, are at the high end.
LJUBLJANA AND THE CENTRAL REGION
Conveniently positioned at the heart of the country is our historic capital city of Ljubljana. Europe's smallest capital, it is an easy days visit with plenty of interesting sights. Property prices are the highest and mainly urban dwellings.
The central region (Savinjska) is described as having a Mediterranean climate and extends from the Austrian border in the north at the magnificent valley of Logarska Dolina south east to the Croatian border and Slovenia's second tourist destination after Bled, Brezice - with the regions spa centre Terme Catez and Mokrice castle having possibly the best golf course in Slovenia. The southern part of the region from Celje down is peppered with relaxing spa centres including Slovenia's largest at Rogaska Slatina and walking and cycling are very popular. Property prices are mid range
but increasing as the region is becoming more widely discovered.
EASTERN SLOVENIA
The weather is classified as Continental, having hot summers and cold winters. The regions main town is Murska Sobota but Maribor, Slovenia's second city, we just allow to sneak in. Most notable to the region are the fine wines produced around Ormoz and Jerusalem producing the well known brand name of Lutomer. The region also boasts a very fine spa and health resort at Terme 3000 and one of the country's best golf courses at Livada.
The geographic location of the area means trips to Austria and Hungary are very easily accommodated. Property prices are generally low and some good bargains are to be found.
