Finding your way around Slovenia

ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT THINGS FOR OUR OVERSEAS VISITOR TO UNDERSTAND IS THE WAY THE REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY WORK, THE PRONUNCIATION OF THOSE REGIONS AND THEIR ACTUAL GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION - PRETTY IMPORTANT ISSUES WHEN HOUSE HUNTING.

Our statistical regions are a bit like counties in the UK but a lot more difficult to pronounce. Each region is sub-divided into smaller regions known as municipalities of which there are 194. Now that's when things get really difficult. Our government has found its way around this by taking 2 letters from the principal town in each region and pre-fixing the car registration numbers with this 2 letter code; and we in turn have adopted the same simplified method. We have listed these codes below along with the major towns of the region and from this you should have little difficulty in navigating your way to the approximate location of a property from any good road map or the map on this web site.

  • CE - CELJE, Savinjska region - located in the central belt, major towns include Žalec, Šentjur, Velenje, Polzela, Prebold, Šmarje.
  • GO - NOVA GORICA, Northern Primorska region - located most westerly, major towns include Bovec, Tolmin and Kobarid.
  • KK - KRŠKO, Posavska region - located south east, major towns include Brežice and Sevnica.
  • KP - KOPER, Southern Primorska region - coastal, major towns include Piran, Izola, Portorož and Sežana.
  • KR - KRANJ, Gorenjska region - located north west, major towns include Kranjska Gora, Jesenice, Bled, Bohinj, Kamnik and Škofia Loka.
  • LJ - LJUBLJANA, the capital - major towns include, Domžale and Trbovlje.
  • MB - MARIBOR, Podravska region - located north east, major towns include Ptuj.
  • MS - MURSKA SOBOTA, Pomurska region - located in the east, major towns include Ormož.
  • NM - NOVO MESTO, Dolenjska region - located south east.
  • PO - POSTOJNA, Notranjska region - located south west, major towns include Cerknica and Ilirska Bistrica.
  • SG - SLOVENJ GRADEC, Koroška region - located north of center, major towns include Dravograd and Ravne na Koroškem.

Slovenia is a small country roughly the size of Wales and can be easily crossed by car in any direction in little more than a mornings drive. Our roads are non-congested and you will rarely encounter a traffic jam, even on our motorways - of which there are basically 4, each radiating from Ljubljana like the spokes of a wheel to the 4 corners of the country. When travelling on the motorways you will need to purchase from any petrol station what we call a vinjete. This is a pass ticket that you stick to the inside of your windscreen and which allows you uninterrupted travel through the toll stations. The cost for the vinjete is currently 35 euros and lasts 6 months. The bordering countries of Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Italy all have their own systems and it is wise to check their requirements before you cross the border.
